"Discovering Sophia of Kyiv"
A new season of the project presents a new series of online lectures dedicated to the architectural monument of the XII century - St. Cyril's Church, one of the objects of the National Reserve Sophia of Kyiv.
A lot of people know the name of this church. But very few people really understand what a unique structure they see every day. It is a real masterpiece of architecture and a treasure trove of priceless works of art.
After St. Sophia of Kyiv, this is the second church in Kyiv that has survived to the present days from the distant times of Kievan Rus. And, perhaps, paradoxically, this church is little known, even among the people of Kiev. In this temple you will not meet crowds of tourists with cameras, and Kyivans here are not very frequent visitors. Meanwhile, due to this alienation from the hustle and bustle, it becomes a kind of attraction. The modern architectural face of the church is the result of the work of the genius architect Ivan Hryhorovych-Barsky, but even more valuable are the 12th century frescoes covering the walls of the church and the 19th century paintings, including masterpieces by Mikhail Vrubel.
In the lectures we will learn about the difficult history of the church, its architecture, painting by Vrubel and modern research of the Church of St. Cyril.
