16 DECEMBER 56 P.M.| ANDRIIVSKA CHURCH MUSEUM

Concert"From Oblivion to Independence"

We invite you to a concert where we will trace the key stages in the history of Ukrainian music — as if journeying through its most significant milestones, reading time through the figures who shaped its development.
This concert carries an educational mission and continues the project “Liberated Music of Ukraine” — a long-term cultural and research initiative aimed at returning to the public sphere the musical heritage of Ukrainian composers repressed by both the Tsarist and Soviet regimes.

The idea for the project belongs to cultural scholar and chair of the NGO Center for Cultural Initiatives Responsible Future, Viktoriia Zubenko.

At the Bouquet Kyiv Stage 2025 festival, “Liberated Music of Ukraine” appeared in the form of a major symphonic program featuring works by Barvinsky, Senytsia, and Shypovych.

This evening, we will begin with the names of repressed and forgotten composers. Symbolically, this tragic chapter will be represented by Vasyl Barvinsky and his profound Prayer — a remembrance of all whose voices were silenced and erased from collective memory.

We will then turn to Ukrainian modernism, presented in our program through the works of Yulius Meitus and Reinhold Glière — composers whose music created a new aesthetic and opened pathways for generations to come.

A central figure in this story is Borys Liatoshynsky — a composer whose creative boldness and innovation laid the foundation for an entire generation of Ukrainian artists, and whose approach became a point of departure for the new wave of composers we will also hear: Valentyn Sylvestrov and Yevhen Stankovych.

Among contemporary composers, the program will include a work by Zoltan Almashi, a student of Yevhen Stankovych. His Seasons illustrate how Ukrainian music continues to evolve today. This piece was written for violinist, general director, and artistic leader of the National Ensemble of Soloists “Kyiv Camerata,” Bohdana Pivnenko.

And finally — a vivid Ukrainian accent from Levko Kolodub, whose primary inspiration was Ukrainian folk music with its colorful melodies, distinctive rhythms, and rich harmonies.
