Lesia Dychko’s “Solemn Liturgy” is one of the most significant works of contemporary Ukrainian sacred music, where the tradition of the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom comes alive through modern harmonies and folk intonations. It is music that unites grandeur and deep spirituality, a testimony to the indomitable culture of Ukraine.
The Liturgy was written in 1999 in collaboration with the renowned Ukrainian conductor, founder, and long-time artistic director of the Kyiv Chamber Choir, Mykola Hobdych.
Performed by the Kyiv Chamber Choir under the baton of Mykola Hobdych, within the majestic walls of Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, the work attains exceptional power and symbolism: in the ancient space that preserves the memory of our history, resounds a modern testimony of a living and unconquerable spiritual tradition.
"The miracle of folk intonations, cultivated by our Ukrainian people through millennia, and the unique beauty of the Kyiv chant — I dreamed of combining them with the depth of the spiritual texts of the Bible. It is in the Liturgy that one can express the most intimate: prayers for the forgiveness of our souls, for peace in the whole world, for our God-protected Ukraine… The days when I worked on the Liturgy were the happiest of my life."
