On February 1-2, 2025 the third season of the Ukrainian art festival Kyiv Art Sessions will take place at the Old Sessions House in the center of London. The winter season of Kyiv Art Sessions will be titled "Heat Ukraine Now" and will have a charitable mission: to raise funds for restoring heating in homes, hospitals, military medical facilities, and other vital establishments that have been destroyed by Russian aggression. Previous seasons — summer and autumn — occurred in June and October 2024.
The Kyiv Art Sessions festival will traditionally showcase the best examples of contemporary Ukrainian art to draw the attention of the global community to Ukraine, whose culture and national identity are under threat of destruction.
The charitable festival Kyiv Art Sessions at the Old Sessions House in London is initiated and organized by the Ukrainian cultural center Dom Master Klass in collaboration with the international charitable organization Art Shield, which supports and empowers artists worldwide, particularly those facing censorship, oppression, or war.
Partners: Subjektiv.art, Knotel, the Association for the Promotion of Film Industry in Ukraine — "Look Ukrainian!", Culturalee.
The central event of the season will be an auction and a charity exhibition-sale of artworks by Ukrainian artists — from established figures like Oleksandr Dubovyk, Ganna Kryvolap, and David Sharashidze to young talented artists who have become part of the large-scale exhibition project "Echoes and Visions." Additionally, artworks by Sergiy Mykhalchuk, a director and photographer, and a winner of the "Silver Bear" at the Berlin International Film Festival, will be featured. A distinctive element of the festival will be exhibits from the War Fragments Museum, showcasing artifacts of war encapsulated in transparent cubes.
Iryna Budanska, one of the initiators of Kyiv Art Sessions in London, the founder of the cultural center Dom Master Class, and co-founder of the Bouquet Kyiv Stage festival, stated: "It is important to present our diverse, rich culture abroad — systematically, strategically, with crucial emphasis for us, but not exploiting the war. Regular festivals of high Ukrainian art in the UK with various powerful programs led by cultural actors themselves, we believe, significantly strengthen Ukrainian cultural diplomacy."
A significant part of the February festival will be the project "People of Steel" — the screening of the documentary film "People of Steel," followed by a panel discussion with the film's director, Serhiy Fomenko, who is also a composer and singer and will present a live acoustic performance for the British audience. The documentary "People of Steel" is dedicated to the heroic defense of Mariupol, the armed resistance against Russia during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The film highlights the sacrifices of Ukrainian defenders, the challenges faced by prisoners of war, and the urgent need for international attention for their release. "The main goal of the film is to ensure that those who are still in captivity are freed and not left without public attention," emphasizes Serhiy Fomenko.
Traditionally, an important part of the festival will be the panel discussions. The winter season of discussions will focus on the role of culture in times of war and will feature the participation of British and Ukrainian historians, art critics, and artists.
The musical component of the festival will include a concert by the renowned violinist Bohdana Pivnenko — a devoted ambassador of Ukrainian musical arts — along with her talented colleague, pianist Anna Khmara.
