PlanetWoman highlights important global themes such as unity, solidarity, and the innerstrength of humanity.
The musical premieres of the project take place around the world —including New York, Los Angeles, North Carolina, Edmonton, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Rome and Kyiv.PlanetWoman’s poetry is by Zsuzsanna Ardó, an award-winning European artist and writer, and the Artistic Director of this international creative project. One of her PlanetWoman poems, called The Ogre, was written on February 24, 2022 — the day Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, as a poetic response of an artist to the horrors of war and its impact on people.
The main idea of the poem is focused on two different reactions to disaster. On the one hand, it represents the unwillingness to acknowledge the terrible events and to live as if nothing is happening — "we’re having a picnic."On the other hand, this line reminds us of a historical event — the picnic on the border between Austria and Hungary on August 19, 1989. This symbolic gesture marked the beginning of the fall of the Iron Curtain and united people in their desire for freedom. In this sense, the picnic symbolizes unity in resistance.
Three women composers from three different countries created musical works inspired by Zsuzsanna Ardó’s poem “The Ogre."
American composer Jamie Klenetsky Fay’s interpretation premiered in March 2024 in New York. The premiere of the British interpretation of this poem by Karen Wimhurst is scheduled for 2025.
The world premiere of the Ukrainian version of this piece, Zsuzsanna Ardó’s poem set by the distinguished composer Viktoria Poleva, will take place on May 3, 2025, 5 p.m. in Kyiv at St. Sophia Cathedral. A week later, on May 10, the PlanetWoman concert will take place in Edmonton, Canada, featuring works by Canadian composers as well as the North American premiere of “The Ogre" by Zsuzsanna Ardó and Viktoria Poleva.
In addition to the music of Viktoria Poleva, the PlanetWoman concert in Kyiv will feature works by Ukrainian composers Hanna Havrylets and Lesia Dychko.
The concert programme will be performed by the Kyiv Chamber Choir under the direction of Maestro Mykola Hobdych.
